Pulmonary veins flow spectral doppler

Echocardiography Textbook

The best position to study Pulmonary Veins flow by spectral Doppler (PW, CW) is the apical four-chamber view. The control volume is placed in the Pulmonary Vein to the depth of 10-20 mm.

Normally, the flow is observed both in the systole and diastole phases. Consists of a Systolic, Diastolic, and Atrial Component.

The speed of the systolic phase is greater than the diastolic, they register on top of the baseline. With the contraction of the left atrium, a small reversion of blood is observed, which is registered below the baseline.

  • S - Systolic phase.
  • D - Diastolic phase.
  • Ar - Atrial Component
