Aortic regurgitation assessment by Jet area/LVOT area

Echocardiography Textbook

The percentage of the cross-sectional area of the regurgitation flow (CSA) to the area of the outflow tract of the left ventricle (CSA LVOT) can be used to evaluate the degree of the aortic regurgitation. (In practice, these parameters are often evaluated visually).
In the left parasternal position, the short axis of the heart at the level of the Ao valve, the cross-sectional area of the regurgitation flow is measured planimetrically (tracing).

The area of the outflow tract of the left ventricle is calculated by the formula:

DLVOT - Diameter of the Left Ventricular Outflow tract (LVOT).

Degree of the Aortic regurgitation by Jet area/LVOT area.

  • Mild < 5 %
  • Mild-Moderate 5 - 20 %
  • Moderate-Severe 21-59 %
  • Severe > 60 %
